Core Editing Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed reviews of legal briefs, memoranda, contracts, and other legal documents.
- Collaborate with attorneys to refine arguments, ensuring factual accuracy and compelling legal narratives.
- Standardize document formatting and citations to adhere to the firm’s stylistic guidelines and court requirements.
- Verify legal citations and references using tools such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
- Participate in editing discussions to implement best practices across the firm.
What You’ll Bring to the Table
- An extensive background in legal editing, ideally within a large law firm or court setting.
- Demonstrated mastery of legal terminology and complex legal writing conventions.
- Keen eye for detail and the ability to spot subtle errors that others might miss.
- Exceptional research skills to verify facts and legal precedents.
- Familiarity with legal software platforms and digital document management.
Scholarly Preparation & Professional Experience
- A law degree (JD) is strongly favored, but not always mandatory depending on your relevant field experience.
- Three to five years of hands-on expertise in legal editing, proofreading, or paralegal roles.
- Proficiency in legal citation formats, including Bluebook and ALWD.
- Prior background utilizing legal research databases.
- Exceptional writing and communication skills, able to explain revisions effectively.
