We're searching for an Editorial Specialist to help shepherd our literary magazines and novels from raw manuscripts to polished, reader-ready pieces. We focus on uplifting Buffalo voices, and your editorial touch would be crucial in making these stories sing. **The Editorial Quest:** * **Manuscript Maestro:** Evaluate submitted manuscripts for fit with our magazine and house style guidelines. You'll need to identify diamonds in the rough, and provide constructive feedback to authors, focusing on character development, plot consistency, and thematic resonance. * **Line-by-Line Legend:** Work through manuscripts line-by-line, tightening prose, correcting grammar, and ensuring impeccable style. Attention to detail is a must, as errors cost time, money, and, more importantly, credibility. Know when to rewrite and when to suggest rewrites to maintain an author's unique voice. * **Collaborative Comrade:** You'll work closely with authors, providing thoughtful edits that respect their creative vision. You will collaborate with our design and marketing teams to create a cohesive final product. Good interpersonal and communication skills are important for maintaining good rapport with our internal team, external freelance proofreaders, and our amazing authors. * **Production Pro:** Oversee projects through the entire production process, ensuring timelines are met and quality is maintained. Track manuscripts from acquisition to print, managing deadlines and keeping projects on track. Working to create a final product you'll be proud of! Create detailed records, so nothing is lost in the ether. **If you've got these skills:** * **Proven editorial experience**: Experience working on literary journals or in book publishing preferred. * **Grammar & style guru**: A deep understanding of English grammar and style is essential. You should be intimately familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style and AP style guidelines. Understanding and practical usage is key! * **Communication master**: Able to provide clear, constructive feedback to authors and work effectively with a team. Must know the difference between critiques and constructive suggestions.
