NEWS & MEDIA: POLITICS, ECONOMICS, AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

The era of digital media has shifted the axis of journalism. In man cases, contemporary journalism has been reduced to 140 characters. One the one hand, this partly due to the unprecedented shortness of the modern attention span. On the other, profit follows the inflammatory. On a massive scale, supply-side and demand-side momentums have dragged the art of journalism into the gutters of industry. As regional, national, and global news networks are incentivized to print the sensational, the outrageous, and the poorly researched prose of writers who were hired because they were someone's favorite niece or nephew gets published. Even for the best-intentioned and well-seasoned journalists of the era, how many of these bright minds are constricted by the political position of their national news outlet?  The result is that many stories go unsung. Could that be yours? If you are opposed to any aspect of the scenario(s) I just described above, then you've come to the right place. As a writer, human rights advocate, and independent researcher, I've sought to create a space where genuine content is not suffocated by corporatism or political power games. I work independently (without political or financial affiliation), and I am unbound by the external pressures one might otherwise face as a writer in this field. If you approach me with a worthy cause, then I will gladly articulate it for you.

OP-ED & OPINION

A 650-700 word Op-Ed continues to carry the value it once did when it was physically printed "Opposite the Editorial Page." Opinion pieces such as this can increase your capacity to connect to the action-minded demographics of your audience, to influence public opinion, or clarify misinterpretations surrounding your expertise. This form of writing can be extremely beneficial for motivated activists, human rights groups, or social organizations because it allows you to highlight a potentially controversial or contested, aspect of your expertise. The Op-Ed offers a stage and spotlight for informed and passionate positions. Whether you are writing a critique about the Hungarian government cutting academic funds, calling awareness to the persecution of journalists in Latin America, or redirecting attention to an overlooked aspect of a current news story, an eloquently phrased Op-Ed can not only increase social consciousness for your position but sway the public in your favor. Essentially, opinion pieces of this nature create a space where a more personal connection between the activist and the people becomes possible. As mentioned, while most Op-Eds run about 650-700 words, their word count varies per journal. The Wall Street Journal, for example, has a 1,000-word limit, the Washington Post has an 800-word limit, and the New York Times will accept high-quality writing within a 400-1,200 word limit. Be sure to let me know which journal you will be submitting to when you make your inquiry! Likewise, on the "Client Requirements Page," I've listed the additional information which I will need from you in order to write your Op-Ed with due diligence.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Special Feature articles transcend the past and present worlds of journalism, and for this reason, it happens to be my favorite medium of reporting-styled writing. The form follows the traditional ethics and ethos of classical journalism wherein the content is vigorously investigated. However, the extreme finesse required to present such stories blends creative nonfiction with narrative journalism. On some levels, these approximately 3,000-word articles live somewhere between "long-form journalism" and "short-form ethnographic writing." The growing body of popular digital journals such as "Longform," "Longreads," "ProPublica," "The Atlantic," "Guernica Magazine," "The New York Times Magazine," "The Cut," "Pacific Standard," "Southerly," "Narratively," and others indicate that the social appetite for these informative yet personal pieces is also increasing. The most successful features can weave a sensitive narrative between politically charged content, and do so while leaving the reader "satisfied' in some way. Unlike a quit-spit news story, a special feature will never stop coldly and abruptly. Further, there is an aspect of honesty and justice that can breathe within a Special Feature Article in ways that it may be restricted in more time-restricted or superficial mediums.

COPY EDITING, CONTENT EDITING & PROOFREADING

What's the difference between these three distinct forms of editing? COPY EDITING employs a high level of detail to comb through your manuscript. This level focuses on syntax, sentence structure, mistakes, inconsistencies, and repetitions far beyond a basic run-through of your document. In this stage, both the small details and the big picture matter, and it is a must to get any piece on track for publication. CONTENT EDITING is a type of copy editing that refers explicitly the "macro" elements of the process: formatting, style, content, design and everything associated with visual design and comprehensibility. Lastly, PROOFREADING happens after the article/manuscript has been printed to make sure that everything has truly been taken care of. It is the final step before your work is released to the world.   For every essay, article or chapter that I edit, I will review the material in stages that correlate to the forms of editing mentioned above. However, I break the Copy Editing into two stages. First, I  read it forward at a moderate pace. Then, I read it backward, line-by-line at a very slow pace in order to fully detangle sentence construction. Afterward, I will proceed to Content Editing, whereupon I read it forward once again, at a flowing pace to find 'hiccups' that might otherwise be problematic for the reader. I segment the Proofreading process into two stages as well. In the interest of saving trees, more often than not, I will the final manuscript through a text analysis software to identify any fine details that I may have missed. If needed, I may print it per the tradition of reviewing a hard copy but I try to maintain a paperless practice. Note: Documents must be sent to me either in word .doc or via google drive so that I can return two copies to you, one with tracked changes/edits and the other clean.

M.A. & PhD. Thesis Editing

An M.A. Thesis, edited according to international industry standards, can cost a working-student up to 600 USD per every 10,000 words (approximately 20 pages single-spaced). This is largely due to the technical complexity of the material contained within the manuscripts, and the future value tied to this document. Not only is the M.A. thesis (in many ways) a reflection of the legitimacy of one's degree, publishing this manuscript can become the entry point for jobs of a significantly higher starting paygrade. The average M.A. thesis runs approximately 40-80 pages, thus fees can notoriously cost upwards of $750-1,800 USD. Further still, the copy editing PhD. thesis can cost between $1,80- $3,600 USD. I feel that both of these quotes are exorbitant, particularly since this is a burden shouldered by students who have already managed to put themselves through school, to manage their rent, and successfully navigate all of the other hurdles that "adulting" requires. For this reason, I charge the flat rate indicated above. Please note, exceptionally technical content and/or manuscripts that exceed 80 pages may incur additional fees. However, IF YOU RESIDE OUTSIDE NORTH AMERICA OR EUROPE, DISCOUNTS MAY APPLY. (Please contact me for details). My goal is for you is that you have a publish-worthy manuscript that you can use to further your career.

I will systematically edit any or all of your website pages (either written in English or translated) so that you can make a strong first impression amongst your past, present, and future clients. An error-free website has the capacity to build confidence between you and your customer before they've even made a purchase, appointment, reservation, or inquiry.
